OML  Millimeter Wave Vector Analysis Waveguide Calibration Kits

OML is pleased to announce the availability of waveguide calibration kits, for millimeter wave vector analysis, covering the waveguide bands between 50 and 325 GHz.   These kits have been designed to support all of the popular waveguide calibration methodologies.   OML has noted that are several different sets of definitions and terminologys for describing the vector error correction procedures.   The calibration method and variables available to the user depend on the manner in which the process is executed in the type of vector network analyzer (VNA) to be used.   The quality (accuracy) of the calibration is further limited by the capabilities of the calibration kit to be used.   OML will not attempt to add its own definitions or jargon to these calibration processes or even speak to which is the best method for any given application.   Rather, OML has undertaken to design a single, universal calibration kit which will yield best possible accuracy with any of the commonly used calibration methodologies.   It contains additional components not normally found in traditional waveguide calibration kits to enhance the ease of making the calibration.  As of April 1, 2004 an additional precision waveguide shim  (0.1 in.+1/2 wavelength ) has been added to accommodate the three-short method of S11 calibration. The price of the kits has been adjusted accordingly.  The contents of the calibration kit are as follows: (See photo of WR-05 Calibration Kit.)

2 ea.  Waveguide Loads (>35 dB return loss typ.)

1 ea.  Precision Waveguide Shim (0.1 in.)

1 ea.  Adjustable Waveguide Load

1 ea.  Precision Waveguide Shim (0.1 in.+1/4 wavelength )

1 ea.  Waveguide Section (test artifact)

1 ea.  Precision Waveguide Shim (0.1 in.+1/2 wavelength )
2 ea.  Precision Waveguide Flush Shorts

Several steps have been taken to ensure the accuracy of any calibration made with these components. Precision waveguide flanges, similar to those used in kits from HP, Maury Microwave, and Flann Microwave, are used on all components containing waveguide sections.   All components are electro-formed and are guaranteed to meet the tolerance specifications of MIL. Specs MIL.-F-3922 further enhanced with inside waveguide corner radii limited to £ 0.001 in.   Where applicable for precision, waveguide section length is machined and measured to within a +/- 0.0002 in. tolerance.   The required offset calibrations are accomplished by using precision waveguide shims and waveguide shorts that have mirror finishes.   Each waveguide calibration kit is delivered in high quality wood container with calibration data (certified mechanical measurement data).

These calibration kits are intended for use with the OML series of millimeter wave frequency extension T/R and T modules.   These modules were designed for use with the Anritsu 37100 and Panorama VNAs and Agilent 8510 and PNA VNA’s.   However, because of their “universal”  design, the calibration kits can be used with any manufacturer’s millimeter wave test sets.   An OML calibration kit, for a given waveguide band, will allow calibration of a reflection only (S11) T/R module test set, a one path two port (S11 and S21) T/R and T module test system, and a two path two port (S11, S21, S22, and S12) two T/R module test system.

Two waveguide loads are supplied with each kit.   The use of two fixed loads allows for faster and easier tests of system dynamic range to be made.   Likewise, two precision waveguide shorts are included in each kit allowing more efficient calibration. Because a precision flange waveguide port adapter is now supplied with each T/R module, only one precision waveguide section is supplied with each kit.   It's length is measured precisely, to within +/- 0.0002 inch.   With this accuracy, this waveguide section can be used on its own as a verification artifact or used in conjuction with a set of precision attenuators (a 20 dB and a 40 or 50 dB attenuator) to achieve a full performance verification.   Please contact OML for delivery information and with any other questions.
