Millimeter Wave VNA Frequency Extension Module Specifications

OML offers two standard modules, the "T/R" and the "T", for extending the frequency range of a customer owned Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) to cover 33 to 325 GHz in waveguide bands (above 325 GHz under development).   The customer provided equipment needed to configure an OML millimeter wave VNA system includes a four channel VNA with an input frequency between 10 and 300 MHz, an RF synthesizer capable of covering up to 20 GHz, an LO synthesizer covering up to 20 GHz and various other accessories.   Information on system configuration requirements can be found in OML white papers and application notes found on OMLs web site "omlinc.com".   The designs specified below have been proven to be compatible with the Anritsu Lightning and Agilent 8510 VNA systems.   References are available upon request.

A “T/R” module is always the primary module of any system.   This module contains a multiplier source, a dual directional coupler, a reference downconverter and a test downconverter.   A single “T/R” module allows the measurement of “S11” reflection coefficient only.   The use of a “T” module, as the second module, allows the system capability to the measurement of “S11” and S21” only.   It is a “receive only” module and contains a downconverter and receives the test signal from the “T/R” module.   The  use of a “T/R” module, as the second module, allows for all four “S” parameters to be measured.   In this configuration the test downconverter of the second "T/R" module acts as the receiver for the signal from the first "T/R" modules source.   When two "T/R" modules are used, "S11" and "S21" are measured the forward direction and then the signal path is reversed and "S22" and "S11" are measured.   A third type of module, the "S" module (multiplier source, single directional coupler and reference downconverter) is available for special applications.   Waveguide band specific specifications are listed below.

Notes:

1]   The power output may be below the threshold of a typical power meter (-20 dBm).   Primary focus will be on dynamic range as there are no internationally recognized power standards above 100 GHz.   Any power data supplied is traceable only to OML's Ericson PM1B calorimeter.
2]   Not tested.
3]   With OML provided attenuator attached, not tested.
4]   Typ. @ 25
°C, not guaranteed, drift measured for 1 hr after completion of 1 hr warmup.   Magnitude and Phase Stability typical (Typ.) or estimated (Est.) performance (not guaranteed) based on the use of "perfect" L.O. cables from the test set controller to the millimeter wave modules, that are not moved after warmup and calibration.   Not tested.
5]   The waveguide sections supplied are equipped with the OML Precision Waveguide Flange which is equivalent to the Flann, HP and Maury precision waveguide flanges.
6]   The waveguide attenuator supplied with these modules is precision coupler style attenuator which exhibits very flat attenuation (1 dB typ. variation) and excellent return loss (typ. >30 dB).   Its purpose is to attenuate the signal to the T module test mixer to the same level as seen by the T/R module test mixer at the output of the directional coupler.   No attenuator needed for WR-03.   The attenuator flange is compatible with the OML Precision Waveguide Flange and Flann, Agilent (HP) and Maury precision waveguide flanges.
7]   45
°C is the absolute module baseplate temperature for survivability.   Stable but potentially degraded performance is possible with module baseplate temperature up to 35 °C.
8]   The customer shall provide RF interconnect cables/connectors, calibration kits, power supplies and any additional waveguide components and fixturing/supports needed for the customer's application.
9]   Testing shall consist of a demonstration of amplitude (not phase) performance.   Customer witnessing is welcome, limited to one day of testing.
10]   OML VNA modules are intended to be frequency extensions for existing customer-owned equipment, receiving DC power from a customer-owned power supply, and receiving drive signals from a customer-owned VNA system.   As the total system configuration is controlled by the customer, and because there are so many possible configurations, CE certification is not applicable or possible.
11]   All orders subject to OML's acceptance and are FOB OML’s facility.

General Information
Information on the use of the above modules is contained in OML white papers and application notes found on OML's web site "omlinc.com".   These designs have been proven to be compatible with the Anritsu Lightning and HP 8510 VNA systems, references available upon request.

Future development plans at OML include effort to productize VNA modules for WR-02.2, covering 325 to 500 GHz in fundamental waveguide.   After the WR-02.2 project is completed OML intends to develop WR-01.5 VNA modules covering 500 to 750 GHz in fundamental waveguide.   Coverage above 750 GHz in fundamental waveguide will be challenging and will be examined in the future.
